Meet Dr. Mammales
Dean Mammales DC
Dr. Mammales' life changed one day when he was a young teenager. He was a typical young boy that was very active in sports. He had a girlfriend and was a state champion black belt in Tae-Kwon-Do. He wrestled and played baseball. Basically, he led a normal life, until one day while at wrestling practice, he was severely injured after having his back twisted in the wrong direction. "I couldn't breathe without severe pain. I couldn't stand up straight…it was one of those injuries where you knew you weren't just going to "shake it off". The following day my father took me to see my doctor and he referred me to an orthopedist. The orthopedist took x-rays of my spine and told me that due to the curve in my spine I would need a rod put in my back to straighten the curve and correct it. If we didn't do what he suggested, I would run the risk of being paralyzed. My world came to a screeching halt. My father decided to consider what the orthopedist said. Realizing the severity of the situation, he decided to take me to see his chiropractor the following day.
The next day, while I was in school, I asked my friends, "What's a chiropractor"? They all had different answers like, "Oh, they snap your neck or they crack your back". I was scared to death. So after school that day, still in excruciating pain, my father and I went to see the chiropractor. The chiropractor took a look at the x-rays and said, "Did you know that your body is self healing and self regulating? For instance, if I cut you, what happens"? I said, "I bleed"? Then he asked, "and then what happens"? "It heals", I said. "Do you know what system of the body controls that self-healing and self-regulating ability? It's the nervous system! What I do as a chiropractor is I remove the pressure that is on the nerves of your nervous system so your body has better communication and it has the best chance of healing itself". He gently adjusted my spine and put me on a course of care for the next few weeks and my body did indeed heal itself. For the next few months, I wondered why traditional MD's and chiropractors did not refer to each other that often. I had made up my mind that I wanted to become a chiropractor and teach people how to achieve optimal health and well-being by practicing the chiropractic lifestyle". After I went to college, I attended Life University in Marietta Georgia, where I received my doctorate of chiropractic in 1996".
Dr. Mammales had worked on the world's top athletes at the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta Georgia. After the games, he practiced in a busy multi-disciplinary clinic in Manhattan.
